Natural Green Diamonds — radiation-tinted rarities

Natural green diamonds derive their color from natural irradiation (exposure to radioactive materials or radiation fields) which alters the diamond’s crystal lattice near the surface — producing green hues. This natural irradiation over geological timescales is uncommon; many “green” diamonds on the market are artificially irradiated (treated), so certified natural-green stones are especially prized. Why collectors pay a premium• Genuine natural radiation coloration is rare and scientifically interesting; colorful examples with even tone and high clarity are quite collectible. Certification (GIA et al.) proving natural origin is essential and drives price. International Gem Society
